George's Barber Shop

What makes West Boylston unique is that it's such a quiet and small town. West Boylston has many shops and businesses considering the size of it.  Whether it be restaurants, shops, pharmacies, or other small industries, West Boylston has it all. Our town is preparing to celebrate it's 200 year celebration in 2008. West Boylston also has a historical landmark, The Old Stone Church which is located at the edge of the reservoir. There is always something to do or somewhere to be in our town. People spend their days at the reservoir, or at Bob's Hot Dogs. Others prefer to spend their time shopping at the plazas, or enjoying a movie at the cinemas.

George's Barber Shop is located on the Centerwood Terrace in West Boylston along with Dunkin Donuts, and a few other small businesses. The barber shop was owned by George Fratantonio. George opened his first barber shop in 1955 near Jerry's Hardware. However, in 1959, he  moved to the new location on Centerwood Terrace. George's son, Vinny,  now owns and runs the shop. He is the only barber working there. The customers of George's Barber Shop are people who want their hair cut. Sometimes,  people just stop in to say a quick hello or to see some of their friends. George's is the busiest on Saturdays. I chose this business for my final project because my dad goes there every Saturday, and Vinny is a very good friend of ours.

Doorway

The barbershop door and the windows are filled with tons of bumper stickers, posters, and signs. It gives a personal touch to the shop.

Sign

The barbershop is defined with large wooden, yellow letters to catch people's attention from the road. There is also a light hanging over so the sign is visible from afar at night.

Signs

Although the sign says that there are three stylsits, Vinny is the only barber in the shop. However, there are four chairs in there. The space is tiny, yet comfortable inside.

Another Sign

Here is another yellow wooden sign over the doorway with a pair of scissors and a barber's comb.

Barber Shop

This quaint little shop if filled with signs, hense the third yellow-lettered sign, here on the right side of the building.

The last golden sign located on the outside on the right of the building. It is just some general information about George's.

Open

The shop is always open on Saturdays. This is the busiest time for the barber shop. This is the time when the guys come in to for either a haircut, or just a place to stop by and catch up with each other.

Doorway

This is a look of the doorway from the inside. It is painted black, which makes the whole room seem darker, but it is still a comfortable atmosphere. You can also see some of the chairs in the waiting room.

TV / DVD player

There is a television and a DVD player to entertain those who wait for their haircut. There are two TV's in the shop; this one is located right above the doorway. There is always a movie playing - usually that of the action or adventure genre. Transformers and 300, are a few examples. (Spiderman is playing now)

Pictures

These are pictures that cover the whole left wall. They are funny pictures with kids in different haircuts so you can convienently choose which style you would like.

Chair

This is one of the four chairs located in the shop. As you can see, there are endless amounts of stickers on the mirrors,as well as on the windows. They add personalization to the station. They are also fun to read.

Chairs

These are three of the chairs in each little station. These are located on the right wall of the barbershop. Down in the bottom portion of the picture, you can see magazines. These are located on a counter which separate the waiting area from the chairs.

Barber Pole

This is a classic barber pole that is inside and mounted on the wall. It gives a nice touch to the shop.

Open Sign

This is a neon sign that tells what hours the barber shop is open each day. George's is open for the longest time on Saturdays. That is when all of the customers usually come in.

Counter Top

Here, on the right side of the shop, is the counter with the magazines, barber pole, and the neon sign.

Shadowbox

Merry Christmas!

This is an antique and vintage Christmas sign hanging up in the shop - wishing customers a happy holiday, (and a happy new year).
