Each Spring, the Performing Arts Workshop puts on a musical.         Students from WBHS showcase their talents in more ways than one during the production!

Performing Arts Workshop

In this class, students will develop skills specifically related to the staging of a musical production.  Students will participate in all aspects of the production – singing, acting, dancing, set and costume design, publicity and tickets.  The successful student will demonstrate ability in music and drama, and a willingness to work on stage as well as behind the scenes.  Research papers on the history of musical theater are required.  Students must also view and review one live musical (professional or amateur production) on their own.  Evaluation is based upon attendance, participation, tests, quizzes and research papers.

A few things that we do before and after the musical are lip syncs. This is our first group activity, and shows how well we can work in groups, our dancing ability, and our ability to keep in time with music.  We do lip syncs from all sorts of musicals, and we have to write a research paper on the background of the musical. A few examples on what we have to write about are: the history of the show, where it was put on, any awards it received, and any actresses or actors that performed in it.

Story of the Play

"The students of Hilltop High are excited! They're going to put on a musical of "Romeo and Juliet." But the school's chorus director, Miss Peggy Donahue, pressed into service by a principal eager to please his superintendent, is horrified. Twenty years before, when she was a student at Hilltop High, she starred in a disastrous musical version of Shakespeare's "Scottish Play," and she believes the curse lingers on. Sure enough, everything that can go wrong does. The set for the balcony scene collapses, Juliet breaks her leg in a freak accident, her understudy develops laryngitis, and the semi-deaf costumer arrives with cowboy outfits- she thought the show was called "Rodeo and Lariat." Add a hysterical playwright, a stage mom from hell, and a mysterious cult of techies who sing a love anthem to their favorite "tool"- duct tape- and you've got one merry mayhem of a madcap musical, quicker than you can say, "Macbeth"-oops!"
